Kindle Reset

with 7 comments

I read a great Kindle tip today at Kindleville, which I’d like to share with you:

The other day I found myself on a 4-hour flight at 30,000 feet or so with a locked-up Kindle. This is at least the 5th time I’ve had to reset my Kindle but this one was a bit trickier. It’s amazing how hard it is to find a paperclip when you’re up in the friendly skies. I checked my bag. No go. Even my handy folder full of various business papers came up empty. Fortunately I was sitting next to a guy who had one and he let me borrow it for the job.

As I removed the back cover to resurrect my lifeless e-reader I had an idea: Why not just tape a small paperclip in the recess of the back of the device, under the removable cover? It looks like there’s enough clearance for this and it would save me the headache of looking for yet another paperclip the next time my Kindle freezes. I’m going to give it a shot as soon as I get home tonight.

  1. I had the same thing happen on a plane and I just removed the battery for a few minutes. I didn’t know about the reset button. Thanks for the tip!

  2. Never underestimate the power of an earring post! =) I usually use my Kindle at the gym while doing cardio on the treadmill/elliptical/stairmaster – it’s great because I don’t have to hold down the pages of a paperback while I’m working out.

My kindle froze up at the gym last week. Rather than getting off my machine and searching around for a paperclip, I took my earring off for a few seconds, used the earring post/earring back to reset my kindle, and voila! All fixed. :-) Just in case you’re caught in a jam again, remember your earrings! (or those of a wife/daughter/girlfriend)!

  3. The process for the Kindle two is different. They do not give you access to the battery or a reset button. However If you slide the power switch to the right and hold it there for 15 secs (or so) the screen will blank, and then you can power the Kindle back on. Alternatively, if you hold the switch for at least 30 seconds the Kindle will re-boot. The screen will blank, then flash, and finally you will see the words AmazonKindle and a progress bar as the Kindle restarts.

  4. I forgot to mention that the Kindle MUST BE UNPLUGGED for the reboot to work.

  5. Listening to “text-to speech” feature on my Kindel 2 and it stopped. I got a text-to-speech error message and snail’s pace speed thereafter. I rebooted per Les Hayden and all is well!! Thank you, thank you.

  7. My K2 froze in airplane in the middle of a save highlight exercise. I just was able to reboot/rest after holding for over a minute unplugged… here at the hotel and after reading your advice–but the screen didn’t blank until just now while I’m writing thinking it wouldn’t–a minute or two after releasing. FINALLY!!! Thanks y’all.
